About Me

I am a mother of three boys (three boys, being punished for my sins!) and have been a fan of photography for years. I started shooting weddings seriously about five years ago. With the arrival of my twins, I decided to reduce my working hours in order to spend more time at home with my boys. Using photography to make up for the loss of income was a natural progression.

This is where you will be able to catch regular excerpts of what I am up to...

I would just like to start off by saying, that the couples who hire me ROCK!! I think I have the best clients, with brides willing to climb on ledges, walk through the veld and even walk in/on water, clothed in their designer white creations, and all in the name of photography. Annelise and Brett are another one of those arty couples, involved in film production. When it came to the creative portraits, Annelise said they were "game for anything", and even suggested a cliff...say no more! Their wedding was a small and elegant affair and the décor details will definitely make the décor post I have been threatening to post... watch this space. Annalise's dress, although very plain and simple, was designed by De Mil Studios (featured at SA Fashion Week). I just pray that they do not, by any remote chance, come across my blog and see where their creation ended up! I am beginning to sound like a broken record here, but another awesome day out, with an awesome couple, brilliant back-up shooter (yip, was lucky once again to have Dror join me) and to experience another special day that makes me think I am lucky to be me!

Hi Andrea

Lovely images, great composition for the 1st and 2nd one.

(04.21.08 @ 09:29 AM)
A friend mentioned that when I back-up shoot with her, she always has to 'prep' the clients about the second shooter at their wedding. Telling them that I’m inclined to get rather excitable and, when very excited, the arms tend to flap around as I attempt to string a sentence together. Plus almost trip over a rock in the process, as the light or position is just so "frikkin" awesome. She knows me, she warns her clients, so no problems there. My clients usually meet me beforehand, so they know what they’re in for! Last weekend was a little different, as I was second-shooting for Jules Morgan.  Whilst Jules and I have met in person and have had lots of email correspondences... she has never seen me photograph. So I had a harsh talking to myself before setting out. I reminded myself I was merely backing-up and that I was to remain as cool as a cucumber, professional and keep the arm-flapping under control. It rained, we did the creatives, Busi and Peter were mingling with their guests...all was going well....I was under control ..... and then......it appeared... a rainbow. I had to have another one-to-one with myself... ("not your client Andrea, calm and collective PLEASE !"). Rainbow and lighting got even more intense....time for another talking-to...the rain had, by now, almost stopped and the sight before my eyes was killing me....Busi happened to walk past me at that exact moment, and then it all went pear-shaped. I ran towards Busi, arms flapping going on, incoherently I am sure, about the incredible light and rainbow, and hauled her out again to get these; wedding-johannesburg-01.jpg wedding-johannesburg-04.jpg wedding-johannesburg-02.jpg wedding-johannesburg-03.jpg I had a great time shooting with Jules; you can have a look at her website to see some more, and mabe get a glimpse of the groom, not just the rainbow!  www.julesmorganweddings.com. Thank you for the opportunity Jules! Busi and Peter if you do get to see this, thank you for allowing me to share this special day....I know you did not get the "pre-warning".

Kate:

Stunning! Don't worry about having freaked out the bride...if I were her I would have been pissed if you DIDN'T get an awesome shot like that! I mean if a rainbow just hands itself to you, what are you going to do? :-)

(04.01.08 @ 04:04 PM)
Anne:

With pics like these I think arm flapping will be welcome by an bride you shoot.......These are stunning....the light is just amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!

#1 is just superb! nuff said

I love these......

Kate:

Where was the venue, by the way?

(04.02.08 @ 05:07 PM)
andreac1:

Good point Kate!....will just go into the admin side and ammend the heading, got carried away with that damn rainbow!

At the Cradle...I am dreading my next one there as we had the amazing yellow light and unbelievable blue overcast sky with Eva, the Rainbow with Busi...now we need something like the northern lights to keep up with the past two!

(04.02.08 @ 05:15 PM)
andreac1:

Ok Done! Thanx Kate, venue in the heading....please feel free to spot these things again.

(04.02.08 @ 05:21 PM)
Cyndi:

So Andrea, since we are going to be at The Cradle in August..... Can you arrange those Northern Lights for us?

I love these shots, the 1st one in particular. I am so looking forward to you flapping your arms at us!

(04.02.08 @ 07:26 PM)
Kate:

My pleasure :-) It's me, Katharine of the dreaded Halloween weekend, by the way - told you I was blog stalking!

It's gonna be hard to top these two Cradle weddings, I've got to say! Not to be a downer, but it's the price you pay when you set your standard so high!

(04.02.08 @ 08:52 PM)
andreac1:

Katerine, I realised it was you as the blog gives your email address I wasn't sure if you had your anorak on stalking in icognito, under the name of Kate so did not want to blow your cover and refered to you by the name you put.
Cyndi - Cradle in August...may even resort to buing a "northern lights" backdrop with fireworks in it. There is the erupting volcano one or a Hurricane come Tornado, ...just backdrops you understand so your hair won't get messed up!

(04.03.08 @ 04:48 AM)
Kate:

Well, I always use my "spare" gmail address for web postings etc, just in case they are visible, but of course it has my surname in it anyway! Kate I just use occasionally for online stuff - it's easier to type and for people to spell! I'm keen for those tornado shots, btw. :-)

(04.03.08 @ 08:13 AM)
Paul Pearce:

Andrea you are out doing yourself again and if you could only harness your "Photographic eye" and sell it you would easily become the next top 10 rated millionaires in the world along with Trump. You know just how to capture true romance, some people write romantic books you write them with spectacular images. I am looking forward to working with you later this year as your second shooter.

(04.10.08 @ 12:20 PM)
Busi:

Andrea! I really don't know how I missed the link to your site on Jules' note. I just saw these pictures now. I've told so many of my friends about the photographer with the flapping arms (remember the language as well :-). I'm so glad you spotted the rainbow...what a day...bright sunshine, rain clouds gathering, thunderstorm, rainbow and dark sky, horizon with a beautiful orange hue at dusk, all in one day. I think it's a good sign, don't you?? And, by the way, I'm reminded of a certain photographer whose was literally scraping the wet ground shooting away :-) It was indeed worth the few raindrops, and missing out on bubbly :-)

(04.11.08 @ 02:20 PM)
andreac1:

Thanks Paul, but that's the problem with passion, you're not really interested in the Moola! so Mr Trump is safe. I am not after his Cartel.
Busi I am glad to hear that you referred to me as the "scrapping and flapping" photographer vs. Sultry and sexy photographer!!

If I was to do the Grimm's brothers fairytale version of last weekend's couple, it would read as follows...... Once upon a time (they all start with that), there was a "foxy" and fiesty gal called Red (as in Little Red Riding Hood). On the other side of the Enchanted Urban Forest there was the charming prince...Prince Stove. Prince Stove had many admirers who dreamt of nothing else but getting hitched to this hunky prince, but the prince was not interested (well he was, but nothing serious). Little Red managed to outwit, outsmart and outshine all the other Cinderellas and she ended up marrying the handsome prince charming.  And...Yip, you guessed it...... They all lived happily ever after!  The sassy and sultry photographer at Red's wedding snapped up a storm and posted these from the Enchanted Forest, just because she got alot of slack about the "nice garden" comment; westcliff-wedding04.jpg westcliff-wedding03.jpg westcliff-wedding01.jpg westcliff-wedding02.jpg BTW: I was sooooo tempted in posting Sue's decor pic's, as the venue decor was so simple, yet sooooo spectacular.  I had to hold back. A couple of brides have commented on how they miss seeing the decor/detail aspect. So have no fear, your wish is my command, I  will save the details and then every now and then will replace a midget post with a bouquet post or decor post

Kate:

Yes please to the posting more pics of the decor/flowers/paraphernalia. I love that stuff! But then I love all your stuff, so you should just post everything! Have I said this before?...I'm feeling deja-vu here... Great photos once again!

(03.27.08 @ 04:42 PM)
Anne:

I agree with Kate! we love detail pics

Mandy:

yello... they just keep getting better and better. love theses pics! seeing as im getting so stalker like id like to add i see you and Tanja Vogt work regularly together. Do you always use a second shooter and visa versa. finally got the fiancé to have a look at your porti and a couple of other photographers. so the ball is rolling. He loved your work by the way.
Now its just a matter of saving and budget issues.

(04.01.08 @ 07:53 AM)
andreac1:

Hi Mandy,
Nothing wrong with stalking...I am a closet stalker myself.
"Closet stalker" are worse than a regular stalkers as we never leave comments... we are often refered to as Lurkers.
I ALWAYS use a second shooter, equipment and photographers sometimes have glitches, and I have guilt issues.I hammer myself over the one image that got away at a wedding...I could never let it go if I lost that entire day!
Tanja and I are friends, we help each other out every now and then, she has her own business, you can find her under www.celebration.co.za if you want to have a look at her work. I usually use a student photographer as a second shooter as hiring an "experienced" wedding photographer would probably put my prices into another league. Also between us (wedding photographers) we sometimes offer to shoot for each other to get the experience and see how others handle certain situations...and sometimes just for the FUN of it!

Ellen:

Dear Andrea,
Have you got more detail on Chris and Sue's Wedding venue (Glensheil, Westcliff), I'm not familiar with Johannesburg and can't seem to find anything on Glensheil. Many thanks, Ellen

Geraldine and Clinton are South Africans living in the UK, who decided to tie the knot in SA.  If you are wondering why so many couples in the UK get married in SA, first and foremost, it's a third of the price in "Ronts" and secondly, to those currently in Gauteng, the foul weather over the last few days - imagine that miserable, continuous, grey and depressing rain for weeks/months on end... and now trying to arrange a wedding, hoping for a lovely day...'nuff said! Geraldine has made Dear Hubbie's (DH) VIP list - DH is in awe. . why?  Well, she works for SAB London (it doesn't take much for DH to put you on this list, anyone that has a connection with ALE makes that list). The reason I am bringing up Geraldine's workplace is that she mentioned there are 24 brides-to-be in her office. Geraldine mentioned this in passing, but I took this "stat" on as a challenge...out of those 24 gals getting married in the UK, Geraldine was going to have the best images, as I am typing this post, I know I shouldn't be so evil (or honest)... it's late, and I blame the chardonnay (well that's my excuse). So back to my evilness...to those 24 brides-to-be, eat your hearts out gals, try "pip" these images! Geraldine and Clinton were absolutely fabulous, a real laugh and a pleasure to photograph...the photographer...pure, pure evil (enter evil laugh) wedding-johannesburg-02.jpg wedding-johannesburg-04.jpg wedding-johannesburg-05.jpg wedding-johannesburg-07.jpg wedding-johannesburg-08.jpg wedding-johannesburg-031.jpg  BTW: To keep the playing fields even we kept the grey skies.

Wow, that's just beautiful Andrea. You're right, her colleagues are going to be green with envy!

Anne:

WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!! What a lucky bride those images are amazing...I love the dramatic skies...Yes she is going to have the best pics!

(03.19.08 @ 06:57 AM)
Kate:

Damn straight she is. And I'm pretty sure no UK photographer is going to get as much out of their grey skies as you did out of ours! Those other 23 girls can eat their hearts out.

(03.19.08 @ 08:08 PM)
Audrey D.:

So lucky...I never get those skies here in Chicago. I must go to SA one day. Your outdoor photos are so cool Andrea.

There are few statements that make me shudder... One that comes to mind is "I am a photographer" and the second... "The venue has a . . . 'nice' garden".

Let me start off by saying I haven't a problem with "nice" gardens...DH (Dear Hubbie) is an avid gardener, so I do know the difference between a Geranium and a Gerbera...and really do appreciate our "nice" garden. And, there really is nothing more rewarding than pottering around in your own garden. BUT, when it comes to wedding photography and if someone describes the venue as one that has a "nice" garden...I tremble.

"Nice" gardens are wonderful to get married in, to sit in sipping your chardonnay, listening to the kids laughing, and running through the sprinkler, but, 'nice' gardens makes it very difficult to acheive awesome creative portraits. That is why I generally look for an alternative location for the creative portraits. Chris and Elzerie got married at Kleinkaap, which is a stunning venue with "lovely gardens".

We had already used the scrapyard for Marné's wedding, so I did not really want to use the same area. Chris is a budding phototographer, so I had a double whammy..."a photographer" and "nice" gardens...but Chris and Elzerie were really open to every suggestion, so I think they got some pretty cool pics...in a lovely garden that we kinda coverted to the Amazon come Garden of Eden, combined with some at the "canal". (Luckily for me Kleinkaap were in the process of building on an extention!)

Chris and Elzerie were a joy to work with, Thank You!  for allowing Belinda and I to share this magical day with you. You both had so much fun on your wedding day and we both enjoyed photographing the two of you! candid-wedding-01.jpg candid-wedding-02.jpg candid-wedding-03.jpg   candid-wedding-04.jpg  candid-wedding-04b.jpg candid-wedding-05.jpg

Jules Morgan:

your writing is hysterical - completely identify with the 'nice garden' statement!
beautiful pics once again too!

(03.12.08 @ 10:29 AM)
Kate:

Well, if that's the kind of pictures you take in a 'nice' garden, I'm not even sure how you could top them in a fantastic, unique, gorgeous and generally wonderful garden! These are stunning. I love the last one with the reflection!
